Buying A Car In Turkey

New cars can be bought in the larger towns and cities in the area, there are no car show rooms in Didim for new cars. Soke, Aydin, Kusadasi and Izmir are good areas to research. This is the easiest method of buying as the new car sales people will organize insurance and registration of your car for you.

There are several second- hand car showrooms in Didim, or you could buy from a repair garage or privately- the latter options would probably be cheaper, but not so safe. It is strongly recommended that you look at as many vehicles as possible to get an idea of piece and quality, and you should take any car you are interested in to a mechanic to be checked over before purchase. You will not normally be charged for this.

Make sure you have all documents relevant for the vehicle. These include an owner’s certificate (for which you will visit the notary’s office with the previous owner), highway use certificate, transport purchase tax documents, and technical examinations certificate, as well as insurance. You will need to take out insurance (sigorta) in your own name and take your number plates (unlike the UK, the number plates are unique to the owner, not to the car) to Aydin police station within a month of purchase for re-registry as the new owner (MA plates are issued for British nationals). Be sure to take all the above documents, your passport with 2 copies, your visa, and cash money in Turkish lira.

You will need to renew your highway use certificate (similar to road tax in UK) in January and June of each year, keep your insurance up-to-date, and take the car for a technical examination every 2 years and emissions test every year (this may be variable depending on type of vehicle and its use).

You should take your European Driving Licence to be translated into Turkish by a licensed notary/translator. Take both documents (and all others mentioned above!) to Aydin Police Headquarters and ask them to issue you with a Turkish Driving Licence. There will be a charge for this..

By law you must always carry your driving licence, passport and all car documents. Spot checks are frequent so don’t forget! It is also worth knowing that you can drive a hired or borrowed Turkish vehicle, but Turkish people cannot drive any foreign plated vehicle.
