Bringing Your Pets From England To Turkey
The pet passport and Pet Travel Scheme are only applicable to EU countries and NOT to Turkey at this time. However your vet may advise that you have this anyway as, if you ever need to come back to the UK with your pet, it may be possible to use an EU country as an intermediate stage in your journey. Also, if and when Turkey becomes a member of the EU, an existing Pet Passport may be useful. Your vet will be able to tell you what the current vaccination requirements are for entry into Turkey. He or she will also be able to advise you on correct DEFRA forms to use and will be able to obtain these for you. Alternatively, you can get the relevant information and forms direct from DEFRA, the address and telephone number of your nearest regional Animal Health Divisional Office will be on the DEFRA website at www.defra.gov.uk. There is also a general helpline for DEFRA which is 08459 33 55 77. The helpline is open from 9-5 Monday to Friday. Apply for these forms at least two months before the date of travel. TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
The airline will require that the animal is securely housed in an IATA approved travel container. The container must be of adequate size for the animal to be transported and there must be water available to the animal on the flight. Once again, DEFRA is the source to go to for details of the size needed for your particular pet. The airline will need the overall dimensions of the container and overall weight of container and animal. Cyprus Turkish Airlines calculate the cost of transporting the animal on the overall weight. DOCUMENTS AND MEDICAL MATTERS Your pet will need a medical examination by your vet which needs to be completed and signed not more than 48 hours before the date of travel. Your pet will need to have an identification microchip inserted. Your pet will need to have a rabies vaccination or booster at least a month before the date of travel and be free from ticks, worms, lice, fleas etc. You will require an export health certificate issued by DEFRA and validated by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). You will need all of your documentation checked and counter signed by the Turkish consulate. Once you have all the documents signed by your vet, you will need to take them to the FCO in London for checking the export health certificate. Then a quick dash over to the Turkish Consulate in London for them to be checked & counter signed there. If you are traveling with your pet, (ADVISABLE!) you will not need an import certificate for Turkey. ALL OF THIS DOCUMENTATION NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED NOT MORE THAN 48 HOURS BEFORE THE DATE OF TRAVEL.
They should weigh the container and expedite you own check-in to minimize distress and undue delay for your pet. Once checked in, the airline staff will take your pet to a quiet area and it will then be loaded onto the aircraft last of all. REMEMBER Probably the most important thing is to liaise with DEFRA and your own vet during the procedures. According to the Turkish Customs website; each person traveling can bring either one cat or one dog or one bird or ten aquarium fish into Turkey. Good luck to you and your much loved cat, dog, bird, fish or other pet ! |
